Life in Fast Forward

6 months ago we were given the most precious gift we could ever imagine...and since that day it seems as though life is moving in fast forward (as evidenced by my lack of time to post on the blog).  There as so many things I want to share, it may take awhile!

The biggest change in our lives has been B's move to Birmingham. He is doing a specialty residency in Oncology at UAB and will be there for 1 year.  We have decided it would not be feasible for me to leave my job for 1 year and look for a new one, so I am still in Huntsville with Em while B and the dogs set up camp in Birmingham. My work schedule allows me 2 days on then 2-3 days off so I am able to go visit on my off time and B is able to come to Huntsville on his off time. In theory, this arrangement seems ok..in practice it's much worse.  Due to the combination of my extreme dislike of driving, my weather related paranoia, and Alabama's stormy season in which the forecast every day calls for thunderstorms, my anxiety level about driving to Birmingham has been through the roof! So far, it has been difficult and I can only imagine it will remain that way. (2 weeks down...50 to go!!)

The last time I shared, it was quite apparent that it was a rough introduction to motherhood for me. And it was. In the future, if I could skip the newborn stage, I would. It's tough...but what I didn't know at that time was that there was so much love and excitement and pure joy that was waiting for me a few months down the road. Em is 6 months old and I cannot believe how fast the time has gone. I remember  wishing she would grow up and now I'm wondering if it will ever slow down.

First, there was the excitement of her smiling at us when she was almost 2 months old....then laughing at daddy when she was almost 4 months old. Then we had our first mother's day and father's day.  In June Emery went "swimming" for the first time, which was funny!  (I'll try to post some pics and videos at the end) She started eating baby food at about 4 months which has been fun for me. Some moms may not like baby food because it's messy, or because it takes longer than the bottle, but I love it! Emery is such a good eater. She eats everything and she really isn't too messy most of the time. She does somehow get food (or something nasty) in her neck roll which is completely disgusting. I don't understand how it happens, but its gross.   It was funny to watch her discover her feet...then her hands...and then try to shove her hands in her mouth. She has become a lot more exciting at playtime. She loves her exersaucer (and so do I, because then I don't have to tote her around everywhere!) and she loves to grab at everything....coffee cups, fingers, HAIR, jewelry, or anything else she can reach.  She's developing quite the personality these days. A couple of weeks ago she started fake coughing. (and I'm not just being a bad mother, this really was fake coughing if I've ever heard it...ask anyone) If you stopped paying attention to her and started talking to someone else...fake cough. If you sat her in her high chair and went to the kitchen and weren't looking at her...fake cough. If you turned away from her...fake cough. As soon as you would start paying attention to her again the cough went away. It was just hilarious. This week, her new thing is shrieking. That's right, shrieking. Its a fun, playful shriek...but that doesn't matter. B and I took her out to eat with us to the California Pizza Kitchen and she would just babble away and all of the sudden shriek with excitement. This occurred about every 5 minutes. It was awesome! I'm not really sure that you can teach a baby not to do that, so I just let her do it. I guess this is the beginning of the parenting decisions that will determine her behaviors later... :)

Here are a few pics and videos of the last few months:

Emery laughing... (sorry the video is sideways but it was taken on the iphone and I can't get it to turn right side up)

A Whole New World

Let me start off by saying, I LOVE my sweet Emery and I'm thankful for her everyday!! I love being a mommy (daytime > nighttime) and she is truly a precious gift.

It's been a busy 6 weeks since the stork dropped off my beautiful baby girl and I've come to discover that nothing about having a baby is easy, except maybe spending money on baby girl clothes.  Before Emery arrived I thought I understood what I was getting myself into, everyone told me it was going to be hard. However, I think that maybe all the experienced parents are too tired to actually explain just how hard it is, and just how much sleep you are going to lose.  I'm going to throw a huge party the day Emery sleeps through the night. With just 2 weeks left until I return to work (and 12 hour days) I am hoping to have this party sooner rather than later.  Luckily, Emery is a great baby. She has had some tummy issues (like her daddy) but now we are getting it all figured out and she's doing much better. Her formula smells like dog food, but she doesn't seem to mind it.

I think for some ridiculous reason Brannon and I envisioned a baby coming out ready to talk, play, and interact (and dress up in cute clothes ;) ) That's funny. So far, we live life 3 hours at a time... Eat, sleep, poop (then change clothes), repeat.  She's starting to be more awake during the day and its exciting to see her grow and develop. She's starting to focus on us when she's looking around and you can tell she knows who her mom is, yay!! I can't wait for her to smile at me! :) In between all of the day to day stuff we have had a lot of fun experiences as new parents...and a lot of firsts.  We are learning as we go and luckily Em still loves us even though we don't have this parent thing completely down yet.

We took our first road trip with Emery and she did really well. We only ventured about 4 hours to Atlanta, but she was great in the car. She slept practically the whole way, only waking up to eat. Speaking of the car, I wish I could have taken a picture of just how packed out this car was! With 2 dogs and a baby I couldn't dig out the camera for a picture. It was insane though. How can such a tiny baby need so much stuff????  We had a great visit. She met her great grandparents Mike and Marge for the first time and we had 4 generations of ladies all together.

Great Grandparents

And now that spring is here, we were able to have our first family day on the mountain in Huntsville. This was not only Em's first trip to the mountain, but mine as well. It was a beautiful day and we had so much fun just hanging out enjoying the first springtime weather of the year. As parents, we figured out that nothing will ever be quick again. An impromptu trip to the park takes approximately 2.5 hours to prepare for.

And the most valuable lesson of all...Family is priceless! Our families have been so supportive and helpful. They give us rest and knowledge and are just fun to be around! They have dropped everything to help us in these first few months and I feel blessed to have such an amazing family. Grandmommas ROCK!

Welcome Emery Grace!

On Thursday, February 3rd, 2011 we were overjoyed to welcome Emery Grace to the world! She weighed 7 lbs. and 13oz. and was 20 inches long. She has pretty blue eyes and dark black hair... and I must say she is quite beautiful! After spending a few days in the hospital, we were able to return home on February 6th.  The first night home was truly a challenge that is impossible to prepare for. Each day has gotten easier and we are slowly falling into a rhythm, thank goodness! I have never done more dishes/laundry and less sleeping in my whole life. Its truly a blessing to have Emery's Grandmommy Peggy here to help give some relief in the late night hours and some teaching in the daytime to help calm my new mom paranoia. Emery is a happy and healthy baby. She loves to eat like her mommy and daddy (and fast, too!) and is finally gaining some weight. She likes to sleep all day and play at night, but we are working to get that turned around.  Our first week home has been an adventure and I can only imagine all the more fun that is waiting around the corner for us as a new family!

Welcome Emery Grace!
